One of the men charged in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, and the only one to initially escape the manhunt of April-May, 1865. He fled to Canada soon after news broke of the killing, and eventually made his way to Italy, where he was spotted in the Vatican as a member of the Swiss Guards; he was eventually caught in Egypt in 1868 and extradited back; his trial ended in acquittal.

Just for the record, Surratt was a Papal Zouave not a member of the the Swiss Guards. He was arrested in 1867 not 1868 and tried in June -AUG 1867. He was not acquitted but the trial ended in a hung jury and the Government eventually dropped the case.
