I'm sure most students of the civil war are familiar with his capture by John S. Mosby on March 8, 1863. But Lincoln seemed more upset with the loss of army horses than one of his generals. He said " I can make new brigadier generals, but I can't make horses". Not exactly true, Stoughton's commission as a brigadier expired a couple of days before his capture and was not renewed following his release from Libby.

Technically Stoughton was only a "temporary" brigadier as He was appointed in Nov. 1862 but his commission was not confirmed by the Senate and expired on 9th on March 4, 1863.

Stoughton was not the brightest bulb in the pack. Not surprising at all that he was captured. Pretty much the only reason he is remembered for doing. He had poor control in his regards to women, well at least around Antonia Ford. I see some list TB as his cause of death.

I knew about his story but thought he was actually on the older side. The man was around 25 when he was captured by Mosby's Raiders.
Sucks the dude died so young...and on Christmas of all days.

His headquarters at Fairfax Court House was similar to the Hooker "bar + brothel headquarters". Stoughton developed a reputation for his fondness of liquor and women. In fact it was after a party that night that he was captured.
Everyone at the Court8 House must have been hungover. I read that Mosby only had 29 raiders with him.
