I'm sure most students of the civil war are familiar with his capture by John S. Mosby on March 8, 1863. But Lincoln seemed more upset with the loss of army horses than one of his generals. He said " I can make new brigadier generals, but I can't make horses". Not exactly true, Stoughton's commission as a brigadier expired a couple of days before his capture and was not renewed following his release from Libby.

His headquarters at Fairfax Court House was similar to the Hooker "bar + brothel headquarters". Stoughton developed a reputation for his fondness of liquor and women. In fact it was after a party that night that he was captured.
