It looks like it's taken 147 years after winning the war and creating a "strong" federal government, that people are realizing that having a federal government with more power than the states isn't such a great thing.
The Confederate States wouldn't allow their central government to be strong enough, the United States let it's central government be too strong. Don't know if we can get back to a happy medium, at least not without a lot of upheaval.
