On this day in 1861 18,000 Confederates under the joint command of Generals Joseph E. Johnston & P.G.T. Beauregard defeated a similarly sized force of Federal troops under the command of Major General Irvin McDowell at the First Battle of Manassas.

This engagement was the first major battle of the War Between the States and was the bloodiest battle in United States history up to that point. It would soon be eclipsed in this grizzly record.
