Thank you for posting this. So many cemeteries have these marks scattered about the cemetery.
 
I had a 2x great uncle Hampton Whitehead, who was a private in the 9th NJ Infantry Regiment CO E ("Jersey Muskrats"). He was wounded at the Battle of New Bern on March 14, 1862 and died of his wounds on March 17, 1862. In all probability he is buried in an unknown grave at the New Bern National Cemetery.
