Sometimes conspiracies and paranoia trump facts

Thought for the day:

Sometimes in arguing about history we spend too much time trying to determine the actual facts.
An example that comes to mind is Lincoln's view on slavery and what he would do about it as President.
We have had threads parsing his statements to try to determine what he actually felt at the time.

But this -- http://civilwartalk.com/threads/texas-governor-calls-in-national-guard-on-u-s-military.112959/ -- reminds me that in a way it doesnt matter what Lincoln's actual views or intentions were; what matters is what those opposed to Lincoln imagined them to be.
