SARATOGA SPRINGS >> Sanford Robinson Gifford was one of America’s most famous 19th-century landscape painters, a leading member of the Hudson River School founded by Thomas Cole.

However, the Greenfield native also served in the Union Army and several of his works were included in a 2012-13 Smithsonian exhibit, “The Civil War and American Art,” which spent several months at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Nice painting of an early war Union regiment. The offices in the left front in blue seem to be wearing "French peg top pants". Note the white militia style cross straps worn by the new yorker standing in the tent.

One of my favorites by Gifford is "Camp of the Seventh Regiment, Near Frederick, Maryland, in July 1863"

Gifford served in 7th Regiment New York State Milita and was mainly stationed in defense of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore throughout the war.

Sanford's younger brother, Edward Gifford, served as a captain in the 128th New York Infantry Regiment. Edward fought at the Siege of Port Hudson, where he escaped capture and was promoted to Major. He died of typhoid fever in New Orleans, August 8, 1863.
