Before being mustered out on April 30, 1866 he served briefly in western Tennessee. This was the volunteer army that he mustered out of, he did remain in the regular army as a colonel eventually reaching the rank of brigadier general in 1867 and a brevet promotion to major general in 1869.

it is interesting how he became a regular officer after then war and despite no army career pre war, he had a 15 year army career after the war

Unless I read it wrong he directed the only division from the 17th Corps at Chattanooga. I'm curious why the rest of the 17th Corps did not participate. Where was the rest of the Corps?

The highest ranking Swiss American soldier of the war. Didn't know he became a regular army general postwar.
