Slidell never did get the recognition in France but his daughter helped secure the Erlanger Cotton Loan. She had a "romantic interest" in the son of Emile Erlanger, the French banker to whom the loan was proposed. The Confederacy got a few million bucks out of the deal and I think these two lovebirds got married.
