I would encourage everyone to attend who can make it. It's a nice conference, with a good lineup of speakers this year. It's just about the "right" size, too, with lots of interesting people in attendance, and not overwhelming.

Thanks for this! I love going to Jefferson. We've always stayed at a B&B, but we won't be going back there! Hint to B&B owners... don't advertise No Kids and let your friend, his girlfriend, and her three horrendous kids stay on the floor above an old schoolteacher. There will be blood.

Oh yeah, if you're interested in the Trans-Miss., get there. And Gary Joiner is an excellent speaker. So was that guy from Galveston, I hear... can't remember his name... hmmm... wears a jester's hat...

Held in Highest Esteem by All: the Civil War Letters of William B. Chilvers, 95th Illinois Infantry

As an orphan, William Burnham Chilvers did not have parents to coach him through his journey of life that took him across the sea from Great Britain to the United States. Shortly after immigrating, he found a home in the army and campaigned with the 95th Illinois Infantry. Years of hard marching and tough fighting carried him through the Vicksburg Campaign and into Louisiana and the Red River Campaign. He served in Missouri, then at Nashville and Brice’s Crossroads, before finishing his career assaulting the Confederate works near Mobile, Alabama. Through it all, Chilvers was a strong abolitionist and sympathetic to the plight of slaves. He wrote about the atrocities faced by African Americans at the hands of Southern whites—as well as by his fellow Union soldiers.

His letters and the editors’ research tell stories of massacres, combat, and idealism in the face of the brutal realities of war. Will Chilvers and the 95th Illinois Infantry fought to victory, but his experience transcends mere combat and instead reveals the development of a remarkable man whose compassion and humanity rose above the ugliness of the Civil War.

I only noticed this thread yesterday, wrote down the contact information, and made my reservation this morning! I also had attended Jefferson's annual Pilgrimage this May staying in the Jefferson Hotel, so had a 10% discount coupon for a future visit and called and made my reservation for two nights there as well. The one thing I passed on, though, was the Friday night meet-and-greet; it didn't sound all that compelling. I hope to see everyone there at the symposium; so far there are about 50 attendees registered!

Is this always in Texas or does it travel to other regions of the country?

I'm sorry I'll miss you there, James. I am not able to go this time. Please ask one of the speakers an impertinent question on my behalf.

HOW on earth have I missed this announcement? Next year, please page me. I don't know if I can make it but will certainly give it a try.

Does anyone know if Excelsior House is fully booked?

It's going down with @J. D. Stevens and @James N. J. D. and I rode together and went to the Harrison County Historical Museum and City Cemetery in Marshall on the way. The heat was pretty brutal in Marshall. Saw James coming down the stairs at The Jefferson Hotel after a bad thunderstorm passed through and as I was headed out to the speaker's reception at the Excelsior Hotel. James is in the room right next to me. Today was a great day. Tomorrow is just a few hours away.
