Sherman did not order this, was not present when it took place, and only found out about it after the fact. The man who ordered the bridges taken up was Gen. Jefferson C. Davis.

And where did he come up with the idea that for the crime of making tents marked CSA, the entire work force in a factory in Roswell Georgia should be put on trains and deported north to Illinois and Indiana with nothing but what they could carry.
They were war workers, making supplies for the Confederate army. Sherman's task was to put a pinch in this supply line.
