Nice looking Sharps carbine. The Model 1859 began the new straight breech series of models. Serial numbers for the New Model 1859 generally run 30,000 to 75,000, with some overlap with other models. The were produced from 1858 to 1863 and came in several different calibers. 27000 were produced during that period and from your serial # I would a very early 1860 made carbine.

I see the end of the hinge pin is broken off. Easy fix, but not necessary. If you want to see if the serial number of the barrel matches Just carefully release the spring and slide the band forward. Just one screw and the fore end will come off. Be careful not to force as wood may be stuck on bottom of barrel. The barrel number will be viewable

Nice carbine. Your carbine covers two military areas. First is the early Civil War area when it was in the percussion era. Secondly it was converted to cartridge for the Indian War era. It appears that all the parts are there. The hinge pin haa been broken, but I wouldn't try to replace it. To try to match aging could be tricky and the way it is now doesn't hurt the Sharps at all in fact it kind of adds to it.

had the same problem with mine. Stopped by S&S when I was in the area and he pulled out a bunch of originals. We matched one to the patina of my gun and changed it out. Looks great now. Yeah I'd replace it to make it look good but thats just me.

Thanks to all who replied, I have informed him of what he has, I may revisit this at some time down the road after I meet him to get a look at it in person, thank you all very much, very informative !
