The "Kitchen Sisters" The women in the Shaker groups came to be known as the "kitchen sisters". The kitchen sisters baked bread and pastries six days a week. As the Shaker settlements grew in size, bread baking became quite a task. It was more common than not for the kitchen sisters to bake 100 loaves of bread daily.
Shaker Daily Bread
1/2 cake compressed yeast
1/3 cup warm water...
1 cup milk
1 Tblsp butter
1/2 Tblsp sugar
pinch of salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Scald milk with butter, sugar and salt. Stir until well mixed. Add yeast to the mixture. Gradually add flour until the mixture does not stick to hanPlace the mixture in a buttered bowl ad brush the top with soft butter. Let the bread rise to twice its size. Knead lightly and shape into loaf in pan Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour
