    September 22 Update
    Gettysburg tour schedule

    Thursday 9/28/2017

6:00 pm: Social Gathering at the Reliance Mine Saloon. You never know who you may run into in this cool authentic looking underground atmosphere.

    Friday 9/29/2017

    Eric Wittenberg’s:

One Continuous Fight: The retreat from Gettysburg and the pursuit of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, July 4-14, 1865.

We will board a Wolf’s Bus Lines Motor Coach at 7:00 AM in the parking lot of “The 1863 Inn of Gettysburg. The tour includes numerous stops, including one at the Daniel Donnelly house on the Falling Waters Road, where we will see the site where J. Johnston Pettigrew received his mortal wound. The owner of the property, George Franks, will give us a personal tour of the property that not many get to see. The cost is an additional $5.00 per person.

Our second to last stop will take us to Falling Waters. The old National Park Service road is not maintained at all, is in very poor condition, and is also quite steep. It is not for the faint of heart. Instead, and thanks to the kindness of the folks who run the place, we park on the grounds of the Potomac Rod and Gun Club and then walk down the C & O Canal towpath to the historic site. It's completely level, but it is about a mile walk. Anyone undertaking it needs to be capable of handling a mile-long walk.

The cost will be based on the number of participants. No profit will be built into the cost of the trip. I will pay for the bus in advance. All we will do is divide the cost of the bus by the number of participants. Tip is not included.

6:00 pm or as soon as we get back: Sit down Dinner. We have the second floor of O’Rorke’s reserved. Seats 30 + people and the food is out of this world.

    Saturday 9/30/2017

9:00 AM till 11:00 AM: Al Mackey’s (Cash):

"Did You Myth Me? The Real and Not So Real of Little Round Top"

We will be at the Meet at the Sedgwick Equestrian Statue, near the corner of Wheatfield Road and Sedgwick Avenue. Buster, and Sergeant Tozier may come up during the tour.

    11:30 AM till 1:30 PM:

Book Signing at the Jenny Wade Room of the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg. This is always a fun and informative event. Stop by and Purchase your favorite books from Eric Wittenberg and Scott Mingus. Who know who else may stop in.

    1:30 PM till 3:30 PM:

"We Were Now Complete Masters of the Field":

Ambrose Wright's Brigade on July 2nd, 1863, we will be following Wright's attack from Seminary Ridge, to the skirmish line, and the Georgians' attacks against the Union line on Cemetery Ridge.

We will meet in the parking lot of the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg We will be walking from Seminary Ridge to Cemetery Ridge so we may have to have some people park near the High Water Mark and then carpool over to the Virginia Monument where we will start. That way no one has to walk back to Seminary Ridge when the tour is over.

    .

    6:00 PM till 8:00 PM: E_Just_ E’s:

"July 1st fighting and the Railroad Cut."

The goal here is to look at what happened at various areas of the Railroad Cut in the first day of fighting from 7AM to 5PM or so. The official tour does not even mention the RC (likely because there is no good parking place for that) so I wanted to do justice. This is going to be a different type of tour, since will not be following armies (much) though the battlefield and look at clashes, but it will be more of 'what happened here' in 10 hours type of Tour.

We will meet in the Parking Lot of the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg at 5:45 P.M.

    Sunday 10/1/ 2017

    Eric Wittenberg’s Tour of ECF:

This tour will examine the confrontation between the Union Cavalry and the Confederate Cavalry on July 3, 1863 and forever put to rest the Carhart theory as pure myth in your minds forever. It’s a real eyeopener.

We will meet in the parking lot of the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg at 8:30 A.M.

This will conclude the organized events scheduled for our second September to Remember. Once again, the weekend has much promise of being the CW event of a lifetime. I hope you enjoy yourselves.

Seats remaining for Fridays bus tour are:
    12

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our membership has been demanding (for lack of better words) a follow-up to last years "Let the Pilgrimage Begin" CWT reunion. Well all the pieces have come together. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to join @Eric Wittenberg on a bus tour from Gettysburg to Falling Waters ( Williamsport ) and retrace the steps of the Confederate army as they retreated after the devastating loss at Gettysburg. Learn why George Gordon Meade chose the route he decided upon and why the AOP seemed sluggish in its follow-up to the failed Pickett, Pettigrew, Trimble charge.

This reunion will involve a bus tour departing Gettysburg on Friday Morning and lasting all day. We will stop and see for ourselves where the action took place. We will learn the pressures handed down to Meade which ultimately effected the performance of the AOP,

This is a unique opportunity to explore an often forgot about chapter in the ACW with our own expert on the subject!

The weekend will include accommodations, a group meal and bus tickets. We will require firm commitments as there will be an expense this time. I will keep it as low as possible. I'm truly excited about this opportunity and can't wait to see my friends again.

    ----------------------
Big News Everyone. It looks like we have a date for our "Retreat from Gettysburg Tour" We also have some very exciting news about expenses.

Date of the Tour: Friday September 29, 2017

Tour Bus Company: Wolf Tour Lines: Cost will be based on number of attendee's. An approx. cost at this time is an incredibly inexpensive $30.00 per person. $30.00 for an entire day of history amongst friends. and experts

    Dinner: Above O'Rorkes Friday night

Accommodations: 30 block of rooms at "The 1863 Inn of Gettysburg" Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

We will meet at the Visitors Center Friday Morning. @Eric Wittenberg and I will determine the time we shall meet and what lot to meet in.

We will depart early AM and return Friday evening. The tour will consist of multiple stops on our way to Williamsport. There will be a lunch stop.

The late September date should also allow for some spectacular foliage scenery along the way.

Eric Wittenberg has done a tremendous amount of research into The ANV and AOP actions following the battle. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn from an expert the activities of the AOP and ANV between July 4, 1863 and the arrival of Grant. To many times we jump from Gettysburg right to the Overland Campaign. There is a lot of action and history that took place immediately following the battle of Gettysburg and Grants arrival. If you haven't studied it in the past, you will be amazed at the movement of the two armies and the decisions made by each commander. It's simply fascinating.

Please check you calendars and let me know if you would like to book a reservation. I will handle it the same way if did last September and build a spread sheet. We will need definite commitments. The largest charter bus holds up to 60 people.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

    Here we go again

So I'm curious, @Eric Wittenberg -- not asking you to give away the game, but do you agree with this guy that Meade gets a bad rap on this whole deal? I know that you're big on busting Gettysburg myths....

That's awesome news KF. I just returned the contract with the bus company and paid the deposit today. The bus will pick us up in the parking lot next door to the 1863 Hotel of Gettysburg where we have a block of rooms reserved under the name Civilwartalk. Welcome aboard!

Can't wait to meet all you guys! Eric is the only one I've had the privilege to meet so far, and I can sure vouch to everyone who might be thinking about going that he is one marvelously engaging speaker and teacher.

Do I need to call the hotel and reserve my own room or are you going to wait until you have a full list and then reserve them all at once? I'm asking because my sister and I might arrive there a couple of days beforehand.

We will be making them individually. To get the group rate you have to call the hotel and tell them you are with the group Civil War Talk. I would suggest call asap. I have just added three to the group. It looks like numbers will not be a problem at this point. BTW, I agree with you, it's going to be a fascinating day.

Good news everyone @Tom Elmore and @KansasFreestater will be joining us on our bus tour to Williamsport. We are off to a very good start.

Remember, please pm me with your commitment to join us as well as the names of any guests that will be joining you. We have a large bus and are already getting close to half capacity. Once we reach the magic number the math will work and we can make a final per person cost and take care of the tour bus company.

That's only day one. We have battlefield tours to schedule and other fun events to plan.

And @Nathanb1 and @James N., that also means you'll have one more Texan in the crowd!

Got to think about. Done it 3 times with Eric already. One more won't hurt. I will wait a little longer and see how it goes here.

I was going to say--I remember that you'd been along with me at least once when we did this tour, Marshall. I can tell you that there will be a stop on this one that you probably haven't had previously, which is at the Donnelly house on Falling Waters Road, where Pettigrew fell.

By the way, other than my long-suffering wife Susan, I can't think of anyone who's been on that tour with me more than three times.
