September 16, 1861 - The USS Conestoga captures a couple Confederate vessels in the Cumberland River, KY.

September 16, 1861 - Skirmish opposite Seneca Creek, near Poolesville, MD, with a party from the 34th NY, Col. La Dew.

September 16, 1864 - Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's, CSA, Cavalry Raid into Northern Alabama and Middle Tennessee, to cut the supply and communication lines of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA. (Sep 16-Oct 10)

September 16, 1864 - Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, sets out from Verona, MS.

September 16, 1864 - The affair at Coggins' Point (Sep 16) and the pursuit of the Confederates, the Richmond, VA, Campaign. (Sep 16-17)

September 16, 1864 - Skirmishes at Snicker's Gap, VA, the Shenandoah Valley, Campaign. (Sep 16-17)

September 16, 1864 - Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, travels to Charles Town, WV, to meet with Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, USA, to discuss a Union offensive against Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, whose army has been depleted with the reinforcement of Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, at Petersburg, VA.
 
And it remained in Union possession until the end of the war. It became a waystation for Confederate POWs,many of whom died there. The Confederate cemetery there has long since been washed away. It is now an NPS venue.

There is a plaque, provided by the UDC I believe,on the wall at Fort Massachusetts with the names of the known Confederates who died and were buried on Ship Island.
 
September 16, 1832: Today marks the birthday of Confederate Major General George Washington Custis Lee. As many know Custis was the eldest of General Robert E. Lee's children. General Custis Lee graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1854 standing 1st in the class. Before the Civil War Custis served in the United States Army Engineers rising to 1st Lt. In 1861 Custis would enter Confederate army service as Captain in the Confederate Army Engineers. From 1861 thru 1863 Custis served as Colonel and aide on the staff of President Jefferson Davis. In 1863 Colonel Lee was promoted to Brigadier General and continued to serve as an aide on President Davis's staff. In 1863 Brig. General Custis Lee volunteered to take his brother Rooney's place as prisoner of war so that Rooney could visit his sick wife. From 1864 thru 1865 Brigadier General Lee served as commander of defenses in Richmond Virginia. In 1864 Brig. General Custis Lee was promoted to Major General and served as such until the end of the war. In 1865 at the Battle of Saylor's Creek Major General Custis Lee was captured by Union soldiers. After the Civil War Lee Engineering and Military Science Professor at Virginia Military Institute. After his father's death in 1871 General Lee would take his father's place as President of Washington and Lee University serving from 1871 thru 1897. In 1882 Lee won his property of Arlington House in the United States Supreme Court and Sold the House in 1883 to the United States Government for $150,000.00. General Lee spent his retirement years at Ravensworth Plantation in Fairfax County Virginia. General Lee died on February 18, 1913 at Ravensworth Plantation in Fairfax County Virginia at the age of 80 years old. General Lee never married and is buried with his family at Lee Chapel Museum in Lexington Virginia.


September 16, 1841:
Today marks the birthday of Union Brig. General Charles Cleveland Dodge. General Dodge was born in Plainfield New Jersey. Dodge started the Civil War as Captain in 7th​ New York Cavalry Regiment. From 1861 thru 1862 Dodge served as Major of 7th​ New York Cavalry Regiment. In 1862 Dodge was promoted to the rank of Colonel of 7th​ New York Cavalry Regiment again in 1862 he would be promoted this time to the rank of Brigadier General serving as such until 1863. In 1863 Dodge resigned from the Union Army in protest. During the New York City draft riots Dodge served briefly with the New York State Militia. After the Civil War Dodge served as business partner in Phelps Dodge Company and as President of a canal company. General Dodge died on November 4, 1910 in New York City New York at the age of 69 years old. General Dodge is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx New York.
