AFAICT the highest ranking Union general to be killed in battle, 9 May 1864.
"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Moments later a Confederate rifleman shot him in the head from a great distance, and he died. His chief of staff, Gen. Martin T. McMahon wrote a detailed account of Gen. Sedgwick's last moments.

I think a lot of new ground was broken during the USCW, including the range at which sharpshooters could take out a target.
