OK, so it was all about interpretations, obviously, the Constitution was none too clear.
I agree with that. Interpretation of the Constitution meant the existence or nonexistence for the Southern civilization. IMHO it was worth a war to get the right to interpret their own Constitution and continue their existence.

Notice Professor Guelzo says a concern was that because both Lee and Davis would have to be tried by civilians in Virginia, it would be difficult to have a jury to convict no matter what the evidence due to their high regard for both men. He says neither were tried ultimately because both were pardoned.

Professor Guelzo says very clearly Lee's actions met the constitutional definition of treason.
