On Feb. 3, 1864 He was taken prisoner in West Virginia by partisan rangers who were raiding river traffic. He was held captive until exchanged on August 3, 1864. He was again briefly taken prisoner in South Carolina on Oct 26, 1864. He had been given a command on the South Carolina Coast following his first exchange.
