    Hi All,

I'm a new member of the Civil War Talk site and could use some help with, what I'm sure is, basic stuff.

First some background...born in California although all my family is in Virginia and Maryland. I'm a retired educator, college level photography, and a life-long musician. Played percussion in the 15th Air Force band, and would love to drum with a re-enacting outfit. Had family on both sides of the war. Bernard Rothenhoefer (Frederick Md) fought for the Union and Burdine Dickerson, and a ton of other Dickersons from Montgomery and Floyd Counties Va fought for the South.

Found my Great Grand Father Bernard Rothenhoefer on the 7th Maryland Infantry(Co G) (Union) roster. There's a note that says he transferred to the 1st Maryland Infantry (Union) but I can't find him on any of the 1st Md rosters.

Any suggestions where to go next?

Also found great grandfather Burdine Dickerson on the roster of the 54th Virginia Infantry (Co A) but can't find much about the unit's history. I understand there's a book about the regiment (Sherwood/Weaver) but I can't locate a copy to buy. I do know that Burdine, and several other Dickersons, presumably related, were captured at Peach Tree Creek and sent to Ohio. But in-between I can't find very much. Probably just looking in all the wrong places.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Piperjoe

    Welcome!

I haven't been keeping up with my own family records, so my search skills are super rusty. I'm sure someone who is much more skilled at this kind of research will be along shortly with some thoughts.

    Welcome to CWT from Alabama!

Try different spelling variations of the full name like B. Rothenhoefer or different ways of spelling Rothenhoefer. I've found that names like that often either get misspelled or shortened then subsequently thrown into the wrong group of files. Best of luck!

Hey Piperjoe, welcome aboard from the Monterey Bay!

As I don't have any ancestors who fought in the Civil War, my genealogical research skills are pretty poor. But if you're looking for a unit to join, I could point you towards my old pards, depending on where you're located.

    Hi Adam,

I'm not too far south of you, Solvang actually. Ann and I come up to Monterey a couple of times a year to ride the Coastal Bike Trail...just an excuse to try all your great restaurants really.

Is there a group in Monterey?

    Hi Piperjoe,
I believe there's an SUVCW (Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) post not too far from here, but they do more encampment and demonstration than reenactment. Sadly, I don't meet the criteria to join, so I just see them during some of the historical events at the Presidio.

That's cool - you're not far away at all. The trails are looking beautiful as spring arrives! Come on up soon.

7th Md. CSR at fold3.com has 6 0r 8 spelling variations, ranging from Rodenhefer to Rothenhoeffer, which are combined under Bernard Roderhoefer (20+ cards). Company G. His Muster-out roll (May 31, 1865) does have him "transferred to 1st Md.", but that was after the war, and he does not show up on 1st Md. records.

EDITED CORRECTION: there are a couple of 1st Md. cards in that 7th Md. file, he is pvt in Co. B, and mustered-out of the 1st Md on July 9th. So, he was in the 1st Md less than 6 weeks.

Welcome from The Trans-Mississippi Department. We have a forum here called "Regimental Histories". Didn't see anything there about the 54th VA Infantry yet. You might wanna start and tag a thread there and see what other info CWT members might have. I did that with a coupla my kin's regiments.

Welcome. I found him in both units. His name is spelled Rodenheffer in Maryland Volunteers, War of 1861-65. The date of his transfer into Company B 1st MD is 6/1/1865. He mustered out a month later.
