He was in a bribery scandal with Congressman Robert La Follette in 1891. La Follette claimed Sawyer attempted to bribe him so he could influence his brother-in-law.Judge Robert G.Siebecker, in a case involving funds supposedly embezzled by Republican officials. I'm not sure if the allegation was true or of the outcome but La Follette made the claim in his autobiography.
