In 1902, the New Orleans Times-Picayune began its famous "Confederate Column." Every Sunday, a full page would be dedicated to letters, reminiscences, pictures, and articles, "to tell of men whose acts of individual heroism do not figure in battle reports…[and] to set in strong light the genius and courage, and other virtues of the Confederate officers and soldiers." From the very first column (March 16th), comes this letter from Captain Belton Mickle of Mississippi, regarding an incident in the spring of 1864, not long before the Battle of Brice's Crossroads.

That very first column is entirely dedicated to Mississippi Confederates, and has stories on the Mississippi Brigade in the Virginia Campaign of 1862, and on the Battle Of Harrisburg, Miss., regarding the S.D. Lee/N.B. Forrest controversy there.
