Salisbury Prison Questions

I just found out that my ancestor with the 32nd Maine Infantry was a prisoner at Salisbury, NC and died of disease there on Nov. 21, 1864. My question is this: I checked the listing of burials in the national cemetery there, but his name is not on the list. Would they have possibly buried him somewhere else? Or could he be one of the unknowns there? The state of Maine records I have do not say where he is buried, just that he died there.

Also--what would the best book on Salisbury Prison be? I need to learn all about it now!

Many thanks!

A book I would recommend on prisons of the Civil War is "Portals To Hell" by Lonnie R. Speer. It is a very good study of all major prisons both North and South. Salisbury is written about. The author also has a good bibliography.
