Sailors and Marines in captivity

I read an account of a Union POW, Robert Knox Sneden recently. While in prison in Richmond, he messed with a group of sailors. These men, less than 20, maintained a disciplined routine, cleaning their areas each morning, squaring away their meager belongings and bedding, mending their tattered uniforms, sharing the cooking of rations. Sneden was impressed by their skills, and cheerfulness and felt lucky to be thrown in with them.

He also noted that the marines were awfully "rough men" but "only fought with the sailors."

Dear Matthew_McKeon;

How facinating!

Thank you for sharing this tid-bit with all of us.

Respectfully submitted,
