This saber has been in my family for as far back as anyone can remember, but I've no idea what it actually is. One guy told me it was an artillery saber, but that doesn't seem right. Any ideas?
I don't think a 1860 cavalry sword has the brass extending down the handle like that, and would have a different scabbard and would have been longer IIRC.
I am pretty positive that what you have there is an 1821 British Royal Artillery officer's sword, which saw active service up into WW1. You can Google that and see several images.
Thanks for the replies, I'll take some measurements but it looks like the blade is shorter in length and taller in height than the 1821 model. I'm also wondering about the scabbard, as the pictures I found all showed metal with rings to attach to the belt.
I'm puzzled, too, about the lack of markings on the blade, aside from the stamped number (which looks like it was struck twice with a bounce of the die)...
