Hi,

This letter is brought up in Shelby Foote's volume II Narrative on pages 657 & 658.

I was wondering whom Lee had in mind to take over the ANV following his resignation? He talks of
someone younger and more physically able to visit the different corps at a faster pace. He talks of having
to rely on others for his "eyes" of the army and that he is "frequently misled."

With the death of Jackson, the disappointment of Stuart's performance in the Gettysburg campaign and
his apparent disagreement with Longstreet in regards to strategy during the campaign in the 2nd invasion
of the north, who would he have recommended? What would have been Lee's next role for the South?

He wrote this knowing that Davis would not accept it so he could really pour his heart out. The one part that is important is Lee talking about his health and an episode he had in the spring. Been much speculation about what that was from everything from heart attack to pneumonia
