Lee Robert E. Lee And Events At St. Pauls Episcopal Church

Image? Robert E. Lee, owner of slaves, Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, of the Confederate States of America,
which sought to ensure that slavery continued in the South. That image?
Maybe the Lee that sought to make peace and heal the wounds he had helped inflict?

I'm certainly not a Lee idolator, but there really is a time when we can benefit by ceasing to try to dig him up so we can hang him. Same with all the other generals.

It would be nice if Neely Young and others who now tell this story as one of tolerance and Christian brotherhood would acknowledge that, but they don't. They don't seem to express much doubt at all, and (for sure) they don't quote Broun's account that reads so differently.

Indeed. It's blatant revisionism. My personal opinion, based on what I know of Lee, is that the truth lies somewhere between Broun and Young. But that's my opinion and I would never deem to present it as fact.
