Rich did become regimental commander of the 1st when Bowen was promoted to brigadier general on March 14, 1862. Rich officially became a full colonel on April 1, 1862. He would be mortally wounded 5 days later at Shiloh and replaced by Lt. Colonel Amos C.Riley.
