Just got my issue of the Surratt Courier put out by the Surratt Society and they reported that the Charles County Geneological Society has agreed to enter into a partnership with other local organizations in assisting the Historical Society of Charles County in helping to revitalize Rich Hill. Rich Hill was the home of Samuel Cox who hid John Wilkes Booth and David Herold in the pine thicket on his property after the assassination of President Lincoln in April of 1865. The original 566-acre tract was owned by Reverend Richard Brown, brother of Dr. Gustavus Brown of Rose Hill and was built about 1783. In 1806 the Cox family of Charles County began acquiring various portions of Rich Hill. About 1840 Colonel Samuel Cox altered the original house to its present condition.

The Historical Society is hoping to bring the house back to its 19th century appearance. The first phases of the revitalization are to be completed in 2015. Once completed, partners will be able to utilize the house for special meetings and private tours for their organization.
