I have read from several different historians the American Civil War/War Between the States was a war, if lost would destroy the republican form of government, but if won, it would show the world that a republican form of government was sustainable.

By winning the American Civil War/ War Between the States, did the United States prove that a Republican form of government was indeed sustainable, but only by threat or force?

Respectfully,
William

Republican form of gov't in Constitutional terms is hard to define and imprecise. But, in general terms, it refers to gov'ts, whose formation was by those to be governed by it, or, at least, was significantly. involved.

The closest description in relation to the United States(and the CW) was the Gettysburg Address(and, perhaps, Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address).
