LoC, patent drawing of Bernhard Franke's repeating cannon, entered July, 1862

Patent drawings count as artwork. I'm no expert but can't remember a ' repeater ' cannon? Patent 1862, ' breech loading repeating cannon ', was that a ' thing '? Before asking what seemed a stupid question I looked it up and couldn't find anything? Seems different from the Gatling gun, right?

Why would this never have made it into use? I cringe thinking about the casualty rate had the Gatling gun been perfected earlier, this seems awfully deadly, no?

I love the old CW patent drawings. During the early years of the CW many patents were applied and issued for weapon systems as the US Gov was buying all sorts of stuff but this one never made to production. After the patent was issued they would build a scale model. Here is one in my collection. Here is a link and if you click on the Technical Info button and the click patents you will see them all.
