I read up on Fort Fisher because a naval ensign who was wounded there. Ira Harris, Jr., son of the senator from New York, later went on to be involved in a fracas in Dallas in 1878 with an ancestor of mine. Shots were fired and a man killed, but Harris, whom my ancestor began caning as the result of an insult, testified at the coroner's inquiry that Col. Pointer never drew his weapon. Other hotheads did all the shooting.
