In Dec. of 1861 he transferred to the cavalry. He would have been captured at Island #10 with his unit but he was back in Arkansas recruiting. He became major in the 2nd.Arkansas Cavalry. The unit reorganized in October 1862 and Reid became it's colonel.

He submitted a plan to Jefferson Davis in January 1864 proposing to recapture New Orleans. He had been held captive there before escaping and noted how the city had few Union soldiers defending it.The plan was never implemented. Gen. Leonidas Polk favored it ( cautiously)and Gen. Braxton Bragg thought the plan foolhardy. Bragg believed the plan would "demoralize our troops and have them destroyed in detail".
