Records When Someone Died While Serving

I am researching someone who is listed in the Fold3 area of service records. He was a Confederate and was in a company in a regiment in the Georgia Infantry. His record indicates that he died during the war at what looks to be a hospital in Chancellorsville, VA.

I am trying to decipher if this man is a man I am trying to find. Is there any other record that might yield more information? Is there any record that might have existed before his death? Did the local level keep rosters of men before they enlisted?

Look in his home state's archives. Any record (or claim by his family) of his service and disposition may be contained there.

Hello @pasttimes If you tell us the man's name, regiment, and county of enlistment if known, we may be able to provide some valuable assistance. Deciphering carded records often gives only part of the story.

Some counties would record and/or honor the local citizens who served or died during the war. If his enlistment date is early in the war, then he may have resided innthe county or town where that Company was formed.
If he joined late in the war, he may have traveled to a different area and joined any unit that needed men.
If tour ancestor was residung in the same county where the regiment was formed, then hevis a match.
