Democratic newspapers in 1868 made sure that their readers understood that Republican calls for civil equality before the law for African Americans masked their real agenda, the social equality of the black man with the white. It did not take much intellect to discern the racial egalitarian intent of the Republicans in the South Carolina legislature according to this article from the Macon Weekly Telegraph:
