It is said that Charlotte E. McKay “had received a magnificent Kearny Cross, a medal of honor with the front inscription, ‘Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori;’ and on the reverse, “Presented to Mrs. C. E. McKay, by the officers of the Seventeenth regiment Maine volunteers, May, 1863.”

Receiving this medal of honor identified “meritorious and distinguished non-commissioned officers and privates, selected for their gallantry.”
I read possibly as many as 800 received this medal and some recipients were women! including Anna Etheridge and Mary Tepe. Sadly, Charlotte had the metal taken away by the government and happily, awarded again posthumously. Still on the search for a photograph of her.

What is the origin of this medal of honor?? Share if you have knowledge of other recipients.

I searched to see if this was a thread. I found mention of the medal, not a gaggle of heroes who may have received this honor.

Thanks! Annie AKA Charlotte.
