From what I've read The New York Daily Times was co-founded by Raymond and a man named George Jones on September 18, 1851.The two had become acquainted when they both worked under Horace Greely at the New York Tribune. The "Daily" part was dropped ftom the title in 1857 and it was published under The New York Times in September of that year.
 
He was removed as chairman of the Republican National Committee because he had fallen out of favor since his disagreement with Thaddeus Stevens was somehow seen as an attack because they differed so much.Stevens believed the seceded states should not be restored to their former status in the Union. Raymond much like Lincoln argued that the states never left the Union.
