Below are pictures of two telescope. The first belonged to General Armistead and is in the Museum of the Confederacy. The second one is in my collection. It is of the same type. It has an artillery lanyard used as a carrying strap. Perhaps this was used as an artillery spotting telescope. Has anyone ever seen another telescope like this? Does anyone have information on use of telescopes by artillery units? Thanks.

My understanding is that telescopes were more commonly used by the signals boys, they were relatively fragile and most effective off of a tripod of sorts.
