My cousin came across this entry and we can't make sense of the acronym "R&F"

The information on William Hardy Bennett appears on the Texas Muster Roll Index Cards, 1838-1900 which states the following:

Bennett, William H., Private
Carter, Asher W., Capt.
Mesquite Light Horse, Dallas, Co.,
13th Brigade., State Troops
Jan 8 - 61 at Dallas, Texas

R&F 50; 1 H; Rifle & Shotgun, found in
post at Dallas; Co tendered to State of Texas,
if accepted, each man desired a good Sharpe's
rifle & an Army Six Pistol; Co. Com. May 21-61

2 MR. dtd. Jan. 12 - 61 & Feb 23 -61. Name not on Feb. 23 -61 MR.

The line includes "1 H" for One Horse. So what does "R&F 50" mean?

Another question: The Mesquite Light Horse eventually became a Confederate unit. Does William Bennett appear in any CS unit?

Rank and File, I think.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if those notes were from his file or his companies file or what.

I searched for his records in Texas. I got a hit on 5 soldiers by that name. I looked at the ones who enlisted from Dallas County.

NARA included a history of the 15th Texas Cavalry. I thought I might see some reference to the State unit.

I know it wasn't the 13th Texas Cavalry--I have the book on that, because my great-grandmother's brother was in that regiment, and it was formed in Houston County from men in East Texas.

Darn those record keepers who just wrote down initials! Which one of those guys fits his age? (If you know that)

I agree with nathandb--try to narrow down by age, if you can.

Also, did either of them file for a pension post-war? If you can track that down and the information matches what you know regarding spousal name and their residential situation at the time the pension was filed, that might also tell you which one is your William Bennett.

According to my 3rd cousin, his Wm H. Bennett was in the 19th Texas Cavalry. He said the age was a little off but he had family (or other pension) records that said that was his regiment. Not 100% positive.

He was preplexed by the note. I didn't see the document so I wasn't sure if the note was about this individual or about the unit.
