"the Queen of Sheba". The black cook of Union Major General George Armstrong Custer, because she rode with his brigade in an old family carriage that he provided especially for her. When Custer and his men were ambushed on June 11, 1864, in Virginia, he escaped but the Queen was captured along with his personal possessions. before daybreak, however, she strode smiling into his camp carrying his valise, having slipped away from the Confederates.
