John is doing another lecture tomorrow:
Civil War Lecture: USS Roanoke
Presented by author and historian John V. Quarstein
September 25 @ 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM

Quarstein will give a 30-minute presentation live from his home in Hampton, Virginia, about a redesigned ship that became the first ironclad with more than two gun turrets. The Merrimack-class steam screw frigate USS Roanoke was built at the Gosport Navy Yard. Commissioned in 1857, the frigate became the flagship of the Home Squadron. When the American Civil War erupted, Roanoke captured several blockade runners and fought during the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862. Noting how the Confederates had transformed their Merrimack into the ironclad CSS Virginia, the Union converted the wooden Roanoke into an ironclad at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The new Roanoke featured three turrets; however, the extra weight of the iron made the vessel unstable. The ship spent the rest of the war in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and was sold for scrap in 1883.
Viewers are welcome to send Quarstein any comments or questions during the presentation, and he will answer them following his talk.
