I've always had the impression that James Longstreet did not pull punches when it came time to fight. If you were a CSA soldier you would have appreciated his concern for your wellbeing but that did not make you very safe, no one was in the ANV. Longstreet gets criticism for his performance at Gettysburg, the July 2nd attack would have probably gone better earlier in the day, but it was furious by every account.

Longstreet thought his men on July 2nd did some of the best fighting on any field of war. They came very close to breaking the Union line. It for sure was furious.
