Niels Eichhorn has written an article about the efforts of Rudolph Schleiden to negotiate peace after the attack on Fort Sumter. I'm calling attention to the article because material is completely new to me and has never been discussed on this site.

Related resources are an article Ralph Haswell Lutz wrote for the American Historical Society in 1915, and a newspaper article appearing in The Abingdon Virginian, February 27, 1863, page 1, column 3. The Library of Congress possesses a rather uninteresting letter from Schleiden to Seward.
