Photo of Frederick Douglass and his grandson Joseph Douglass

Frederick Douglass is reputed to be the most photographed American of the 19th Century. This month is the 200th Anniversary of his birth. Let's celebrate the Douglass Bicentennial by posting our favorite photos of this icon of Abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

Just because this thread is in the Reconstruction Forum, don't hesitate to post earlier or later photos. Also, feel free to post more than one. Please give a comment or two on what the photo means to you. A little about when the photo was taken is appropriate as well.

It's not a photograph, but I really admire the young firebrand Douglass in the University of Maryland's Hornbake Plaza:

He wasn't always the solemn old man.

Frederick Douglass with his second wife Helen Pitts (sitting) . The woman standing is her sister Eva Pitts. (photo circa 1885-1890)

On September 15, 1838, 11 days after he escaped to New York, Frederick married Anna Murray. They took the surname Douglass, after a character in the poem The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott. The couple had five children. Anna Murray-Douglass died in 1882. In 1884, Frederick married Helen Pitts, who was a female rights activist. As Helen was white and around 20 years younger than Douglass, the marriage created a controversy. They remained together till the death of Douglass in 1895.

Frederick married Helen Pitts who was twenty years younger than Douglass. That's a big age difference eh?

    Thanks for sharing this, Pat!
Do you- or anyone else know- if there are any surviving descendants?

She was in her mid-40s at the time, 46 if I recall correctly. While the age difference was large, she only outlived her husband by eight years.

I like this image because Douglass looks both fierce and calm. It is either a painting or a colorized photo --I apologize that my search abilities are limited at this moment.

Seems like a man of action in one of those contemplative moments, wondering what he'll do next to advance his cause.

Lincoln sure found him to be a formidable opponent, then a much better friend and ally.

    Stand and deliver.
Mr. Douglass is holding us accountable in that shot. Good one.
