Possible sword pommel

Was out this evening in Harford County, Maryland and dug a high tone to find this ornately carved copper/brass piece that shows remnants of gilding. If not for the hole in the side, I would not have thought this may be a sword pommel, but it seems like a possibility. If you have experience with swords, circa late 18th/ early 19th century, would you let me know if you've seen this design.

At first i thought it might be a brass bed finial but the more I look I believe it may be an early sword pommel and the hole in the side is for the hand guard.
