Pope and The Army of the Potomac

You are not wrong. Pope was in charge of the Army of Virginia from June 26 to Sept 12, 1862 (officially relieved of command). Some of the units of the Army of the Potomac, technically still under McClellan, were transferred to his command in time for the Second Battle of Manassas.
But don't get annoyed. No reputable Civil War historian and very few enthusiasts (or even rank amateurs like yours truly) would say otherwise. And if anyone else even knows a Pope from a McClellan... be glad, correct them gently, and encourage further reading. :D

The Army of Virginia commanded by John Pope was a newly created force (totally independent from McClellan's Army of the Potomac), consisting of disparate units from General Fremont's Mountain Department, McDowell's Department of the Rappahannock, Bank's Department of the Shenandoah, and Sturgis' brigade from the Military District of Washington. The Army lasted only from June through September 1862 when it was disbanded after being defeated at Second Manassas.
