Pink was the favorite mount of Colonel John Hammond of the Fifth New York Cavalry of Crown Point, New York. This unit mustered into the war in October, 1861. At the time the unit purchased 108 Morgan horses. They were a favorite breed for their sturdiness and perseverance.

Only 8 horses survived the war. One was Pink. He had accompanied Col. Hammond in 88 skirmishes and 34 battles.

After the war Pink returned to Crown Point with Col. Hammond. He died at the age of 30 years in 1886.

Colonel Hammond had monument erected to honor Pink in a small park in Crown Point, New York.

The monument reads:

"This horse carried his Master 25 years and was never known to show fatigue, while other horses of cavalry and flying artillery were dying from want of food and exhaustion. He was present at 88 skirmishes and 34 battles...."

This monument is a testament to a rider and his horse. It represents a sacred bond between the rider and horse.
