His second unit, the 34th Ohio, was a zouave regiment which was assigned to Western Virginia. After becoming a brigadier his brigade was at the Washington fortifications until it became part of General Sturgis' force which went to the aid of General Pope's Army at 2nd Bull Run. He missed Antietam because he was back defending Washington but did join in at Fredricksburg. This is where he had the incident with the horse.
