Photographs of Confederate Prisoners of War

Thought I'd add a few more to the list.

These images of Confederate POWs at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio were posted here awhile ago by @chubachus.

I love the guy hamming it up and waving his hat at the camera in the bottom photo.

Not a photo, obviously, but the fact that this is dated 1866 by the experts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art gives it some special relevance:

This is one of a collection of four photographs of Camp Morton, Indianapolis, IN, owned by Eugene F. Drake, a private in Co. I, 60th Massachusetts Infantry. His regiment served as guards at Camp Morton in August 1864 until mustered out on November 30, 1864, so that may give some indication as to when this image was taken.

Most of Camp Morton's prisoners were from the Western theater - the Army of Tennessee, Morgan's raiders - as well as some from the Trans-Mississippi. Some of the Confederate troops captured in the battle of Helena, Ark., were sent Morton. The 43rd Indiana Infantry had participated in the capture of the 37th Arkansas Infantry at Helena in July 1863 and later met them again while guards at Camp Morton in summer of 1864.

Some of the prisoners appear be wearing lighter colored uniforms, quite possibly undyed wool.

Thanks for posting. I had a 3 x great-granduncle that may be one of these men. He entered the Confederate Army in Feb.1863. He was well into his 50's. He went as a replacement. He was given a deed to 67 acres of land as payment. He was in company E 60th TN and captured at Big Black River Bridge, and died at Morton the following summer. (7/2/1864). He already had two sons die while in the Confederate Army. Another son that survived the war was a Captain in the 122nd Illinois.
