Let's get started: One of my objectives in The Confederacy at Flood Tide was to write an analysis of the June-to-December 1862 period by pretending that I did not know the results. It's kind of like the present. We don't, for example, known how the virus situation will turn out Afterward, it will all be clear in the review mirror.

Here's an example: After the Union defeat at Second Bull Run nobody knew how things would turn out for Washington. Members of Lincoln's cabinet were panicked after Pope send his famous message to Halleck warning the the General-in-Chief should be prepared to save Washington if Pope's army became useless

War Secretary Stanton ordered that a warship be held at the ready to take the President and cabinet members out of Washington and he ordered that the Washington arsenal send munitions to New York for safekeeping.

But McClellan, for all the legitimate criticisms, turned the situation around in three weeks. The chaotically desponded Union army recovered its morale and stopped Lee. One of McClellan's first orders was to reverse Stanton's directive to send the Washington armory supplies to New York.
